News reports indicated that this image was taken at dawn on June 26, 1014 on the Salem Common. It depicts families seeking refuge with the few possessions they were able to save from their homes. The homeless sought refuge in several locations throughout the city: the Salem Common; the Salem Willows; the Broad Street Cemetery; and Forest River Park. Babies were born in several of these locations on the night of the fire.
