The Arthur T. Way Leather Company was one of Salem's oldest leather companies. The property included a separate shed, which stored greases and solvents; this shed exploded during the fire, fanning the flames and the spread of the fire. Although the main building was sprinklered with a fire wall installed, the entire company was destroyed by the fire.
