Ruins - Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company, Destruction of Mills and Fire Debris
Until the southerly change in the wind direction on the evening of June 25, it was thought that the fire would move south of the mill district. With the change in the wind direction, only the fire-proof buildings of the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company complex survived the heat of the fire. Although the company had its own fire brigade, the raging fire could not be kept under control; the brigade received no help from other firefighters because the complex was cut off from the town after the Union Street Bridge burned.
