The Salem Rebuilding Commission wanted to create a memorial to the fire. It was decided to create a park bordered by Harbor, Lafayette, and Washington Streets. This image shows the triangular piece of land before the development of the park occurred. Two hotels are located at the corner of Harbor and Lafayette Street - the Poirier and Levesque Hotels. Before the fire, Engine House 1 stood at the corner of Lafayette and Washington Streets.
