This image, published in The Salem Evening News on June 30, 1914, depicts the improvised relief efforts that occurred immediately after the fire was extinguished. As stated in the caption, "Hungry mothers and their children are drinking milk and contentedly munching crackers despite the fact that they are homeless . . ." This "dining room" was set up near the Salem Armory on Essex Street.
