Prior to the fire, Lafayette Street had a reputation of being one of the finest streets in the city of Salem, due to its length and the great elms on either side of the street, originally planted by Ezekial Hersey Derby. Taken from the vantage point of Leach and Holly Street, Robb's photo depicts the destruction along Lafayette Street from Derby Street to Holly and Leach Streets.
