One of several images found in a photograph album compiled by William F. Abbott, a bulding contractor in Salem. This image depicts firemen fighting the fire on Margin Street. A strong wind was present during the conflagration, spreading the fire from one building to another through sparks that were carried by the wind landing on neighboring buildings. Firemen on the roof of one building are watering down a neighboring building to prevent fire from starting should hot sparks land on the second building.
