Storehouse No. 1 in the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company complex, located on the corner of East Gardner and Lynch Streets, was one of three buildings that survived the fire, two of which were part of the Naumkeag company. Storehouse No. 1, also known as the Finished Goods Storehouse, was within five feet of the fire. The windows in the building included fire shutters, which closed because the heat of the fire melted the fusible link; the shutters protected the building so well that the sprinklers were never activeated, protecting all the stored goods within the building.
