Scope and Content Note
The collection includes accounts, invoices, prices currents, cargo records, and bills relating to voyages of the ships Asia, Luna, Palladium, Hope, Packet, Palmer, Israel,
and the schooners Beaver, Bunker Hill, and German from 1811-1855. This collection has been arranged into two series.
Series I. Ships' Records contains records documenting the vessels under Captain Henry Larcom's command. Series I is divided into ten subseries. The first nine subseries,
Asia (Ship), Luna (Brig), Palladium (Ship), Hope (Ship), Packet (Brig), Palmer (Brig),
Israel (Ship), Beaver (Schooner), Bunker Hill (Schooner) and German (Schooner), are individually
designated by vessel name. Records include cargo records, accounts current, and invoices. The tenth subseries, Other Vessels' Records, contains a small amount of records for additional
vessels, organized alphabetically by ship's name. Records for these vessels typically include invoices, cargo records, and accounts current.
Series II. Financial Records documents the personal, financial history of Henry Larcom and his business role as agent for Israel Thorndike. The records include accounts with individuals,
bills, and memos, and correspondence concerning prices currents.
Henry Larcom was born on February 21, 1777 in Beverly, Massachusetts. He married Fanny Ellingwood (1780-1847) on July 13, 1800 and the couple
had one daughter, Frances Ellingwood Larcom (1807-1883). Larcom was a ship master and merchant, primarily trading in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Lisbon, Portugal.
He sailed for years as captain and business agent for Israel Thorndike (1755-1832), of Beverly and Boston, Massachusetts. Larcom died on February 24, 1862.
