Historical Sketch
The 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Association was established at a regimental reunion in 1871. The association had an elected president, vice president, adjutant, treasurer, chaplain, and secretary. The association's History Committee maintained the regimental history and appointed members of each company to collect information related to specific company histories. The association continued to arrange annual regimental reunions and published a regiment history in 1886. Company F of the 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was especially proactive in collecting and maintaining records of their company's service during the Civil War and afterwards. Company F held their own reunions, meetings, and published a history of the company in 1896.
The Roanoke Association was an organization that celebrated the capture of Roanoke Island under General
Ambrose E. Burnside as a part of the Burnside Expedition in 1862. The 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry participated in
this expedition along with twenty other Union regiments. Every individual who took part in the Burnside expedition was eligible for
membership in the Roanoke Association. Many members of the 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Association were also
actively involved in the Roanoke Association.
