Historical Sketch

The Everett Guard was formed by Lieutenant John F. Dunning in response to the call from Congress in 1861 for ten regiments from Massachusetts. Dunning had previously served in the 6th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company K. He asked former Governor of Massachusetts, Secretary of State, and U. S. Senator from Massachusetts, Edward Everett, to sponsor the company. In return, the company would be called the Everett Guard. Everett agreed and Dunning began recruiting in August 1861 in Boston and by September was ordered to report to Camp Schouler in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. The Everett Guard joined the 22nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as Company D, with John F. Dunning as Captain.
