Historical Sketch

The New Hampshire Militia was first organized in March 1680 by New Hampshire Colonial President John Cutt. The militia formed units for the French and Indian War and served in General George Washington's Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. During the early 1800s, the militia maintained the ranks. At the beginning of the American Civil War the state raised volunteer regiments to aid in the war effort. In 1879 the militia was designated by the state as the New Hampshire National Guard.
