Series List

Scope and Content Note

The Spanish-American War Collection includes enlistment information and correspondence regarding Americans who fought for the United States during the war with Spain. This includes a brief history of the Volunteer Infantry organizations for all states and a list of men who enlisted for service from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Additionally, correspondence is included from Richard M. Shoemaker, sergeant with the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment Volunteer Infantry, while he was stationed at Camp Hastings in Chautauqua, Pennsylvania and Camp Thomas in Chickamauga Park, Georgia. Also included in this collection is a passport document from 1895.

Historical Sketch

The Spanish American War was a four-month conflict between Spain and the United States, beginning on April 25, 1898 and lasting until August 12, 1898. The war was fought in Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and in the Philippine Islands and Guam in the Pacific. American volunteers were raised from state militias to help outfit the United States Army and Navy. In 1898, the Treaty of Paris allowed temporary American control of Cuba and, following the purchase from Spain, indefinite colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
