Biographical Sketch
Moses Kimball (1779-1867) was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts to Deacon Nathaniel Kimball (1733-1819) and Elizabeth Low (1736-1819). He moved to Newburyport as early as 1801, entering into the mercantile business with his older brother, James Kimball (1770-1828). The Kimball brothers dealt in textiles and other merchandise, the first decades of the 19th century a period of high business activity. Moses married Lavinia Barnard (1788-1871) of Newburyport in 1815, with whom he had five children: Lavinia (1816), Sarissa (1818), Lydia (1820-1838), Ann Boylston (1821), and Abby Caroline (1824). He died in 1867.
