Scope and Content Note

The Herman Parker Collection of Glass Plate Negatives contains 80 glass plate negatives in four different sizes created by Herman Parker. The majority of the images were taken from his family's summer home, "Redgate" on Marblehead Neck, Massachusetts, looking across the harbor toward the town side. Most are of boats and yachts in Marblehead, but also include images of his family and their summer house, pets, and a portrait of himself. There is also an image of Fort Andrew (Plymouth, Mass.), the U.S.S. Brooklyn, a model of a fishing schooner, the Eastern Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club. Two prints of yachts (negative numbers 19 and 20) can be found in Box 1.

Biographical Sketch

Herman Parker, son of Charles Wallingford and Mary Jane Schoff Parker, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 2, 1866. In 1891, he married Lillian Hayden Percival (1867-1948). He was an architect and, in the early 1900s, he worked as a retail clothier in his father's firm, Macullar Parker and Company. By 1930, he lived in Marblehead and worked as a craftsman. He enjoyed sailing and owned several boats during his lifetime. He made a small model of his yacht Jane before destroying her and presented it to the Corinthian Yacht Club. He died in 1946.
