Scope and Content Note

The Barzilla Lumbard papers consist mostly of letters, accounts, and other papers related to Lumbard’s career as a mariner. It also includes some correspondence of his wife and oldest daughter. It has been arranged in two series.


Series I. Barzilla Lumbard Papers is divided into two subseries. Subseries A. Business Papers contains letters to and from him regarding the shipping business, an account book, various accounts, and a page from a logbook for the brig Franklin. Subseries B. Personal Papers includes letters from his brother, nephew, and brother-in-law and letters to his wife while traveling on business.


Series II. Family Papers contains letters to Susan Lumbard and Lydia Lumbard. It also contains a handwritten agreement from Susan to sell her share in the brig Carrier.


Biographical Sketch

Barzilla Lumbard was born in Truro, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1770, to John and Rebeckah Lumbard. He was a master mariner and ship owner. He married Susanna Osgood in 1799, and they had three daughters: Lydia, Elisa, and Ann. He died in Amesbury, Massachusetts, on May 2, 1829.
