Scope and Content Note

The papers of this Salem, Massachusetts, ship captain consists of ships' papers and business correspondence. The collection has been organized into two series.


Series I. Ships' Papers contains: invoices, account sales, financial statements; letters; insurance policies; ships' dimensions; comparison of dollars and exchange at Batavia and Calcutta; an agreement with a blockmaker and other documents for building a new ship, most likely the Thomas Perkins; and purchases of cargo.


Series II. Business Correspondence contains letters received from various merchants and agents.


Biographical Sketch


Emery Johnson was born in Warren, Massachusetts, on August 24, 1790, to Eli Johnson (1767-1807) and Martha Miriam Burbank (1767-1848). He was a master mariner and ship owner and a member of the East India Marine Society. The ship Thomas Perkins of Salem was built at Portsmouth in 1837 for David Pingree and Emery Johnson.


He married Sarah Saunders (1797-1880) in 1824. They had four sons: Emery Saunders (1827-1886); Charles Augustus (1829-1851); Horace Palmer (1832-1851); and Francis Henry (1834-1835). He died in Salem, Massachusetts on January 19, 1845.
