Scope and Content Note
The Young Family Papers contain correspondence, financial and personal accounts,
letters to family members, and ships' papers of this Maine family. The collection
has been divided into five series.
Series I. Francis E. Young Papers contains transfer
of goods notices, business-related and personal correspondence, cash accounts
records, itineraries, and some journal entries.
Series II. Frank E. Young Papers contains personal
correspondence and shipping articles. Most of these letters were sent while Frank
was aboard the Yumuri ship.
Series III. Joseph A. Young Papers contains accounts
of expenses, bills and receipts, business-related and personal correspondence,
contracts, an examination of the crew by the Vice Consulate of the United States,
payment receipts, insurance documents, and a note of protest. There are also some
maritime-related ephemera, such as a circular for the Seamen's Institute, a notice
to shipmasters, a blank charter party, and a catalog of ship chandlery and stores.
Series IV. General Family Correspondence contains
correspondence between members of the Young family and to extended family members
such as brother- and sister-in-laws.
Series V. Other Ships' Papers contains freight bills
from the Forest City and Lewiston
Steamers that were owned and operated by the Portland Steam Packet Co.,
outside any discernable relation to the Young family's involvement in shipping.
Francis E. Young was born in 1829, in Bridgton, Maine, to
John and Sophronia Young. He married Elizabeth Uln and had one daughter with her,
Susie Young. He was an accomplished ship captain, mastering several ships such as
the Sarah and Walpole, and
sailing all over the world, from Singapore to Rio de Janeiro. He died on May 12,
1856, after a voyage to Rio and was ultimately laid to rest in Yarmouth, Maine, that
Joseph Young was Francis E. Young's older brother, born in 1825, in Bridgton, Maine, to John
and Sophronia Young. He married Mahala Young (b. 1830) and had three children with
her: Frank E. Young, Grace H. Young, and Joseph A Young. Like his brother, Joseph
was a ship captain, mastering the barks Abbyla, Eureka, and P.C. Merryman
and the ships Enoch Talbot, and Samuel Fales. His papers and correspondence make up the majority of this
collection. He passed away on July 8, 1905 and was laid to rest in Yarmouth,
Frank E. Young, the son of Joseph and nephew of
Francis, was born in 1858 at sea on a ship his father
was working on. It appears that he neither married nor had any children throughout
his life and the date and place of his death is unknown. He was, however, a ship
captain like his father and uncle, mastering the ships J.B.
Brown and Yumuri.
