Historical Sketch

The Samaritan Society of Salem, Massachusetts, was organized on December 10, 1832 and incorporated in 1881. Its purpose is to furnish food, clothing, furniture, rent, and other supplies to the poor and needy in Salem. Money to purchase supplies and to give assistance is generated from annual dues, one time gifts, and trust funds. One such trust fund was established by the Salem Relief Committee, Inc. when that charitable society folded in 1949.
