Scope and Content Note

The Henry Moulton papers document his career as a master mariner and include ships' papers, seamen's protection certificates, and some personal papers. Folder 8 contains regulations of the port of Malaga (185-), rules for regulating the use of fires and lights in vessels within the port of Calcutta, regulations for pilot at Fort William (1863), as well as some ephemera. Folder 9 contains an 1831 Geometry textbook inscribed with his brother, William's (1837-1854), name; a story inscribed with his sister, Lucy C.'s (1835-1864) name; receipts; a letter from his brother William (1849) while Henry was on the bark Loretto Fish; a letter dated 1851; a letter to his wife about the wreck at sea of the ship Robert E. Winthrop and rescue of crew by the German bark Arion; a letter from a fellow crew member of the ship St. Paul (undated); and copies of letters and other literary works.


Biographical Sketch

Henry Moulton was born on September 21, 1824 in Westbrook, Maine, the son of William S. and Mary Ann (Porter) Moulton. He was a master mariner. He married Lydia P. Spiller (1828-1906) in 1859. He died in Boxford, Massachusetts, on December 16, 1908.
