Scope and Content Note

The Robert Knox papers contain business and personal papers belonging to Robert Knox, a United States naval officer. This collection has been divided into two series.


Series I. Boston Navy Yard contains material from Knox's work at the Boston Navy Yard. This includes record and memo books of employees, timber, and activities, reports on repairs and condition of vessels, journals about transactions, letters and orders to Knox, and miscellaneous materials. Included within the miscellaneous materials is a certificate confirming that Knox was elected to become a member of the Naval Library and Institute in 1942.


Series II. Personal Papers includes bills and receipts, an analysis of a Fitchburg Railroad directors' report, and papers about Knox's estate.


Biographical Sketch

Robert Knox was born on November 4, 1770 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Barrett) Knox. He was a captain in the United States Navy. He married Ann Richardson, and they appear to have had the following children: Samuel, Robert Jr., Benjamin, Charles, Elizabeth, Harriet, and Joseph—this may not be a complete list. Robert died on February 23, 1857.
