Scope and Content Note

The Winslow L. Knowles papers contain ships' papers from some of the ships which Knowles commanded. The ships' papers include correspondence, accounts and disbursements, surveyors' reports, and prices current. Also found within the papers is a leather wallet that Knowles was given by Henry Bath and a letter explaining Bath's gift.


Biographical Sketch

Winslow L. Knowles was born in Eastham, Massachusetts, in July 1789. He moved to Brewster, Massachusetts, in 1843. Knowles commanded many ships in the Valparaiso and South American trades, including the ships Albatross, Chile, Edward Everett, Henry Turke, Moro Castle and Southern Rights, and the brig Eliot.


He married Sally Hinkley on August 7, 1813; they had a least one son, Winslow L. Knowles Jr., who was born in Eastham on May 24, 1817. Knowles died on January 26, 1870. Winslow Jr. also commanded many ships in the same trade routes as his father. He died in Calcutta on October 5, 1863.
