Historical Sketch

The Oriental Insurance Company was incorporated in 1824 by William Fettyplace, John Andrew, Henry Prince Jr., Richard S. Rogers, John B. Osgood, Tucker Daland, William Proctor, Franklin H. Story, and Joseph Ropes. The company shared space in the East India Marine Hall with the East India Marine Society and the Asiatic Bank after the building's dedication in 1825. The Oriental Insurance Company was one of the larger insurance companies in Salem (listed in the 1837 directory with a capital of $200,000). In 1837 it was directed by Nathan Endicott, who was president until at least 1857. The company has disappeared from the directories by 1859.
