The Essex Insurance Company Records include 24 volumes of marine policies, two volumes of fire policies, and one folder of marine and fire policies from 1835 to 1855.


Historical Sketch

The Essex Insurance Company, founded by 1835, was situated at 170 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts. According to the 1837 Salem Directory, the Essex Insurance Company was directed by Charles Treadwell and its presidents included William H. Foster, John W. Fenno, James Harris, Emery Johnson, Thomas P. Pingree, and John Preston. Daniel L. Proctor is listed as secretary. The capital is listed at $100,000. Directors, presidents, and secretaries can be traced through early Salem, Massachusetts, directories until 1855, after which the company disappears from the directories, indicating its dissolution.
