Scope and Content Note

The Augustine F. Heard Jr. papers contain transcriptions of Heard's 1854 correspondence to his parents. Also included in this collection are transcriptions of manuscripts, presumably by Heard. There are three copies of the manuscript "A Chinese Execution at Canton in the Revolution of 1854-5;" the first copy is from John Heard, the other two copies are from Fam. Mss 433. There are no original materials in this collection, everything is a transcription.

Biographical Sketch

Augustine F. Heard Jr. was born in 1827 to George Washington and Elizabeth Ann (Farley) Heard, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1847 and then sailed for China to join his brother John, in order to learn the family business. John had taken over their uncle Augustine Heard's (1785-1868), successful trading firm in China, Augustine Heard and Company. Augustine Jr. was employed in Canton and Hong Kong and eventually served as the head of company and later as a roving agent in Europe. He was the American Consul General to Seoul, Korea in the 1890s. He died in 1905.
