Scope and Content Note

The Charles Otis Lee Diaries cover the entire period from 1876 to 1899, with a diary for each year with the exception of 1897. Lee made daily notations on the weather and commented on many events happening in town, including fires, parades, shipping news, deaths, houses being built, and trips he and his wife made to Boston, Maine, and elsewhere. There are also comments on national events, from a fire in Brooklyn, NY, to a disputed 1876 presidential election, Although the comments are brief, the diaries contain an excellent picture of life in Manchester, Massachusetts, for nearly a quarter of a century.

Biographical Sketch

Charles Otis Lee was born in Manchester, Massachusetts, on November 20 1848; he and his twin sister, Ada E. Lee, were the first children of Andrew and Jane E. (nee Bailey) Lee. Charles's father was a druggist for many years in Manchester and his son continued working in the family business, A. Lee & Sons. The business was a combined apothecary firm and fancy goods store. After Andrew Lee's death in 1896, the business continued with Charles and his brother, Frank. The business closed sometime between 1905 and 1909. Charles Otis Lee married his second cousin, Ella Cheever but they had no children. Lee apparently resided in Manchester his entire life and died on July 20, 1917.
