Scope and Content Note

The William Howe Green papers contain a mix of materials relating to Green's life, including journals and photographs. Included in the collection is Green's memoir, which describes most of his life. The memoir provides the reader with a glimpse into the weaving industry in England and America in the nineteenth century and an emigrant's journey to America. Also included in this collection is a journal that details Green's journey of 1,700 miles to recover the body of his adopted son, who had died during one of the battles of the Civil War. There are notes about a journey to Scotland, two carte de visite photographs of Green's parents, and five cabinet cards.

Biographical Sketch

William Howe Green was born on February 5, 1818 in Churchfields, Kidderminster, in England. In 1837 he was trained to work a Brussel simple loom to be a carpet weaver and worked in this capacity to help support his family. From the age of fourteen to twenty he worked as an apprentice to a weaver. He later went on to work weaving Scotch carpet in a factory, until poor trade conditions in the area led him to emigrate to the United States in 1845, eventually ending up in Danvers, Massachusetts.

On November 9, 1841 Green married his wife at the New Meeting House in Kidderminster, England.
