Series List

Scope and Content Note

The Mary Drebit Papers consist of World War II-era correspondence from three United States Soldiers to Mary Drebit, an Essex County resident. The collection contains some drafts of letters from Mary Drebit to the soldiers as well.

The letters document the day-to-day activities of enlisted soldiers during World War II and describe the locations where the soldiers were stationed. However, because the Army censored correspondence, the letters include very little detail about the military itself. The letters also portray life on the home front and contain references to popular music, dances, and books of the period. Of interest is their description of a single woman with her own business during the 1940s.

Biographical Sketches

Mary B. Drebit lived in Salem, Massachusetts, and worked as a hairdresser. She opened her own beauty shop in February 1941.

Frank Sass, a Staff Sergeant in the 324th Service Group, 342nd Service Squadron, was first stationed in Africa and then on the islands of Sardinia and Corsica in the Mediterranean.

Joseph E. Tetrault, also a Staff Sergeant, was assigned to the 47th Fighter Squadron of the United States Air Force and was stationed at Wheeler Field in the Hawaiian Islands.

There is little information provided on correspondent "George"; however, the letters indicated that he served on a naval vessel.
