Series List

Scope and Content Note

The Tabernacle Church of Salem records document the church's founding and its activities from 1781 to 1887. Included are the articles of incorporation, membership lists, pew deeds and tax accounts, treasurer account books, and building plans. Of interest is a document signed by Paul Revere in August 1806 (B1 F4).

Historical Sketch

The Tabernacle Church of Salem was founded in 1629 in conjunction with the First Church of Salem. When First Church Pastor Samuel Fisk was dismissed from service in 1735, he led a group of parishioners in building a new meetinghouse (also named First Church) which was then compelled to change its name to the "Third Church of Christ in Salem" in 1762. The Great Salem Fire of 1774 burned Third Church to the ground and a replacement meetinghouse was built in 1777. This building was copied from the Tabernacle Church in London, made famous by its association with George Whitefield, which led to the nickname "Tabernacle Church." In 1812, the first six Congregational missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions were commissioned from the Tabernacle Church. Today, the Tabernacle Congregational Church can be found at 50 Washington Street, Salem, Massachusetts.

Provenance

The bulk of this collection is from an unknown source. The volume of members was given in 1920 by Hilda G. Clark and the volume of pew deeds was donated in 1964 by A.J. Toomey. The Articles of Covenant was donated by the Beverly Historical Society on September 14, 1978. The Samuel McIntire receipt for carving capitals (1802) and 2 receipts for purchase and carting of a church bell made by Paul Revere & Sons (1806) were a gift on December 2, 1982. The copy of an answer to a petition made to the Tabernacle Proprietors Committee (Feb. 7, 1804) was donated by Ruth Clarke West on June 24, 1997 (acc 1997.026). In 2015 a poster for the Tabernacle Church fundraiser of April 21, 1886 was integrated into the collection as a gift from the Harvard University Archives in 2005 (acc #2005.009b).
