Scope and Content Note

The William Dean Papers contain correspondence and financial records from 1805 to 1828 for William's hardware store. The bulk of the collection consists of daybooks maintained by William from 1805 to 1826.


Biographical Sketch

William Dean was born in 1775 in Swansea, Massachusetts, to John and Rebecca Dean. He was a Salem, Massachusetts, hardware store owner. He is listed as a clockmaker in The Book of American Clocks. He married Lydia Rotch in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1811. He and his wife were both active abolitionists. He also served on the executive committee of the Essex County Temperance Society and on the board of managers for Salem dispensary. He died in Salem of consumption on November 3, 1846 and is buried in a Quaker cemetery.
