The Thomas Dean Papers contain shipping, personal papers, and family papers of Thomas Dean, a Salem, Massachusetts, shipmaster and merchant. Shipping papers include personal bills and receipts, as well as account books, receipt books, correspondence, and legal papers. There are also financial and legal papers for other Dean family members including Lydia, William (1763-1791), Thomas (b. 1787), and Thomas (b. 1818).


Biographical Sketch

Thomas Dean was born in 1723 in Salem, Massachusetts, to Thomas Dean(e) (1694-1795) and Martha Gillingham (1698-1729). He was a shipmaster, merchant, and Customs Inspector. He married Mrs. Mary Cash (1726-1794) on April 9, 1754. They had ten children. He died in Salem on July 8, 1802.

Provenance

The Thomas Dean Papers are a reorganization and integration of one box of manuscripts which were removed from the Waters Family Papers I and two account books which were a 1902 gift of Henry F. Waters.
