Historical Sketch

The East Branch Dam Company was incorporated by the state of Maine in 1852. David Pingree and Eben S. Coe were heavily involved in the development and operation of the dam although they are not referenced in the Articles of Incorporation. The company was authorized to erect dams at the outlet of Webster Lake, Webster stream, and near the Grand Falls to increase the facility in driving logs and other lumber. It had the right to purchase Grand Lake Dam and to collect tolls on the lumber which passed over Grand Lake Dam. On March 18, 1903, the East Branch Improvement Company received its charter from the legislature of Maine. This charter authorized the taking over the franchises, real estate, and all rights and privileges held by the Telos Canal Company.

The East Branch Dam (Lock Dam) has been rebuilt at various times and is now under the operational control of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway for recreational and fisheries management purposes.
