Series List

Scope and Content Note

The David Pulsifer Papers contain correspondence with Mary (Fletcher) Pulsifer, written during their engagement from 1822 until 1825. There is correspondence between David and other Fletcher family members; in addition to correspondence between Mary (Fletcher) Pulsifer and her family. This collection also contains a diary, or commonplace book, that is filled with poems and excerpts of poems chosen by David Pulsifer. The cover of the book has been labeled by a previous archivist as "Mary Flecher Pulsifer Commonplace Book, 1805," probably because it is stamped "Mary Flecher"; however, the entries in the book are signed "DP" and the last entry is dated after Mary's death. It is likely that Mary had given the diary to David.

Biographical Sketch

David Pulsifer was born on December 21, 1796 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to David and Elizabeth Pulsifer. He worked as a painter. On June 7, 1825 he married Mary Chamberlain Fletcher of Chelmsford, the daughter of Josiah and Zilpah (Proctor) Fletcher. Mary was born on June 30, 1805 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. According to David's diary, he and Mary had become acquainted with each other in Salem in February 1822. They had one child together, Mary Fletcher Pulsifer, who was born in Salem on March 26, 1826; she died six months later. His wife Mary died on April 9, 1826.

David married his second wife, Elizabeth Savage Brown, of Salem, on July 10, 1832. David died on December 3, 1867.
