Scope and Content Note

The Oliver Briard Papers contain the correspondence of this Portsmouth, New Hampshire merchant. Correspondence to Oliver Briard has been arranged by the name of the correspondent and then chronologically. The bulk of the papers consist of family letters sent to Mr. Briard from his family: older brothers William and John; John's wife Catherine; nephew, William; and brother-in-law William Appleton. Letters from John and Catherine deal primarily with finances and John's request that Oliver take particular care of Catherine while he is at sea. Letters from William Appleton pertain to locating fabric samples on Mr. Briard's behalf in Boston and the location of an insurance claim that was originally filed in Naples, Italy. The remaining correspondence is from John Noble (a possible relation of Mr. Briard's wife) and William Brewster.
