Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of documents relating to the operation of the schooner Cora Morrison of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. There are invoices, receipts, insurance premiums, bank deposits and a license to load oysters. The collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title. In Folder 1, a melodeon is a 19th century reed organ manufactured by Mason and Hamlin of Boston. It has a foot-operated vacuum bellows and a piano keyboard.


Historical Sketch

The schooner Cora Morrison was built at Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1866. It weighed 88/89 tons, was 79.2 feet long, 22.75 feet wide and 8.1 feet deep. It had one deck, two masts, a square stern, and a billet head. It was registered March 4, 1878 in Wellfleet. The owners were: Jesse H. Freeman 5/32; Charles F. Higgins 3/32; Darius A. Newcomb 1/32; Barzillai Kemp 1/32; Sally R. Dyer 1/32; Israel Pierce 1/32; Solomon B. Rich 1/32; Charles S. Young 1/32; William H. Young 1/32; Wellfleet; C.E. Morrison 8/32, J. S. Curtis 2/32, Provincetown; Ed. Knowles 1/32; Charles H. Knowles 1/32, Swampscott; Nehemiah M. Baker, Jr. 1/32; Lorenzo D. Baker 1/32. The master was Edward Kelley.
