Series List
SERIES I. Vessel RecordsSERIES II. Business and Personal Papers
Scope and Content Note
This collection documents the voyages Captain James Lowell made from Bath, Maine, to Charleston, New Orleans, Liverpool, Glasgow, Marseilles, Martinique, the West Indies, and the Bahamas. The majority of the collection is in English, with some papers of the ship Pleiades in French. Each series is arranged chronologically.
Series I. Vessel Records contains records relating to
the brigs Sarah and Pleiades, the schooner William, and the
ships Ceylon and Roger
Sherman; an 1823 agreement with Gilbert Trufant for the building of a new
vessel; and correspondence written after Captain James Lowell's death that
references the vessels Sea Gull, James Henry, and Butler.
Series II. Business and Personal Papers consist of
correspondence and financial papers. These papers include an 1831 letter by Freeman
Clark about his severed connection with an abolition society and a document
appointing Freeman Clark, William D. Sewall, and Thomas H. Donnell to a committee
for the appraisal of Captain James Lowell's estate in 1843.
Biographical Sketch
James Currier Lowell (d. circa 1843) was a shipmaster and ship owner from Bath, Maine. His parents were John Lowell and Rachel (Curtis) Lowell. James's siblings were William Lowell; John Lowell, who died young; and Truxton Lowell. He also had two half-siblings from his father's second marriage: Mary Ann Lowell (1813-1900), who married William Heath (1814-1896) in 1843; and John Currier Lowell (1822-1867), also a sea captain. James Lowell's papers indicate that he did business with ship-builder Gilbert Trufant and with the ship-building firm Clark & Sewall owned by Freeman Clark and William D. Sewall. William Heath became the administrator of James Lowell's estate in 1843.
