Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the shipping papers for ship master Nicholas T. Snell, Sr. and correspondence to his family from his son, Corporal Nicholas T. Snell, Jr. (1843-1864) while fighting in Virginia during the Civil War.


Biographical Sketch

Nicholas T. Snell was born in 1810 in Westport, Massachusetts and worked as a Salem, Massachusetts ship master. He married Mary Henderson in 1835 and they had one son, Nicholas. Nicholas, Sr. died in 1880.


His son, Nicholas T. Snell, Jr. (1843-1864) served as a Corporal with the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He died of wounds received May 21, 1864, near Richmond, Virginia.
