He attended Bowdoin College, graduating in 1825. Hawthorne married Sophia Amelia Peabody (1809-1871) in 1842 and together they had three children: Una (1846-1877), Julian (1846-1934) and Rose (1851-1926). He wrote several short stories, which were collected in Twice-Told Tales (1837) as well as his more famous novels The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851).

Richard Clarke Manning, Jr. (1867-1957) was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Richard Clarke Manning and Sarah Elizabeth (Yeaton) Gould. Clarke Manning, Jr. graduated from Harvard and went on to study at the Universities of Bonn and Leipzig before returning to Harvard to obtain his PhD. He taught Latin at Hobart College until 1903 and then at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio from 1903 to 1937. Clarke Manning, Jr. married Gertrude Devol in 1912; the couple did not have children.

Manning Hawthorne (1906-1985), the son of John Francis Bennoch Hawthorne and Edna, was the great-grandson of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
