Historical Sketch

The Cushing Guard originated in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1774. The company served during the Revolutionary War under General John Sullivan's command in Rhode Island; during the War of 1812 they were called to perform coast guard service. The company assumed the name Newburyport Artillery Company in 1820. In 1834 the Washington Light Infantry, a rival military organization, disbanded and many of its members joined the Newburyport Artillery Company. In 1844 the members voted to change the name of the company to the Washington Light Infantry. In 1852, during the mayoralty of Caleb Cushing, the company was again renamed the Cushing Guard. In 1855 the company was annexed to the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia and formed company A, in the 8th regiment. It served in the Civil War as a part of the 8th regiment.

The Newburyport Veteran Artillery Company was organized in 1854 to perpetuate the name of the Newburyport Artillery Company.
